Skiing A group of 8 hearty winter souls travelled north to NH to ski. Arriving Friday evening we unwound from the week and then arose early the next morning to ski at Waterville Valley. While we lacked the blue skies and sunshine, we didn't get bogged down in long lines and the afternoon ended with a small snow storm for a extra dusting of powder. That evening we enjoyed a hot tub in a local community center and a great dinner and roaring fire. Much laughter was shared along with Norwegian glogg. We stayed at this place if anyone is interested. http://cyberrentals.com/NH/TeichWHITE.html . 54 Pegwood Road, Campton, NH.

Finnish Dinner January 24
In homage to our small Finnish contingent, we had a Finnish dinner with a menu of rye bread, roast pork loin, boiled potatoes, cucumber salad, carrot casserole and whipped delight for dessert. Kimball and Peter Orne filled us in on the highlights of Finnish history and the group which included 5 new people amazed themselves with all of the interconnections among themselves. The dish that people liked the most was the carrot casserole. The recipe is as follows:
Carrot Casserole - Porkkanalaatikko
1 c. cooked rice, 2 cups milk, 4 c. shredded carrots, 1 tsp. salt, 1 T. brown sugar, 2 eggs, beaten, 3 T. butter, 1/3 c. breadcrumbs. Preheat over to 375. In a large bowl combine rice, milk, carrots, salt, sugar and eggs. Pour into a 2 qt. baking dish. Melt butter and combine in breadcrumbs. Sprinkle over the top. Bake until carrots are tender about 45 -60 minutes.

January 11 The Movies
A group attended the opening night of the Norwegian movie Cool and Crazy which was playing at the Coolidge Corner Movie theatre. While the Japanese food enjoyed prior to the movie did not really play into the Scandinavian theme, the movie was a great chance for everyone to test their Norwegian skills. Peter and Kari both reported that they were able to understand great parts of the movie, but were greatful for the subtitles. It is a great movie, lovely photography and some funny scenes. It traces about a year in the life of a men's choir that lives in the Northern reaches of Norway, near the Russian border. Rent it from your local video store!

February 16: Skiing - Not!
While the interest was there for some cross country skiing, the weather was just not in our favor and so we decided that dragging skis along on a dirt track was just not going to cut it. We opted instead for making pizzas at Kari's house instead and enjoying the fireplace.

March 16: Dinner at Bugabook Creek
A group of us enjoyed dinner at Bugaboo Creek and we were priveleged to have Betsy Anderson join us for dinner. Betsy will be the Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden starting in August. She was gracious in answering all sorts of questions pertaining to working for the State Dept. and being a career diplomat. Betsy also supplied us with a wonderful list of Swedish links that are now on the Swedish Links page.

April 27: Boston Breakers Soccer Game
Come celebrate Spring and Norwegian women! Two Norwegian women are now playing on the
Boston Breaker's women's soccer team. They face off against the San Diego Spirits on April 27 and we will be there to cheer them on. Tickets are only $16 and if we get more than 5 people to commit to Peter, he can get tickets directly without going through Ticketmaster. We will plan on meeting at 5 for an early dinner before enjoying the game at 7 pm. I watched the Breakers' play last season and they were fun to watch.

May 17: Syttende Mai Dinner
