Association of Fundraising Professionals. Formerly known as the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, the Association of Fundraising Professionals is a membership organization comprised of almost 25,000 fund raisers in 157 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The association's Web site provides information on fund-raising ethics, public-policy issues that affect fund raising, and certification for fund raisers. It also offers links to other Web sites of interest to fund raisers.

CompassPoint Nonprofit Services. Planet 501(c)(3): Tales from the Nonprofit Galaxy. Planet 501(c)(3) is a comic strip that takes a humorous look at non-profit management and fund raising. New installments appear monthly on the Web site, which is run by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, a San Francisco non-profit organization that provides training and consulting services to other charities. The strip is drawn by Miriam Engelberg, a CompassPoint employee who teaches computer classes and provides consulting services for charities.

Direct Mail Response Rate Calculator. Developed by Moore Corporation Limited, a communications company in Lincolnshire, Ill., this Web site includes forms that help fund raisers determine how large a test mailing is necessary to test a new direct-mail fund-raising appeal, calculate how many recipients must make a gift for a mailing to cover its costs, and test whether the results are statistically significant. The site also allows fund raisers to calculate how large the full-scale mailing should be to match the response rate to the test mailing and to figure out how large a variance to expect between the results of the test mailing and the full-scale mailing.

Ebase is a free data-base program that allows charities to keep track of such information as how much money donors have contributed to the group, the topics on which activists want information, and how people prefer to be contacted. Non-profit groups can also e-mail members and donors directly from the program. Ebase can be downloaded free, but to make modifications to the data base, charities must own FileMaker Pro. Ebase was originally developed by Desktop Assistance, a non-profit group in Helena, Mont., which is now part of the Rockefeller Family Fund's Technology Project in New York.

The site includes interactive audits that groups can use to assess their fund raising and management practices, a sample fund-raising plan, and advice on making a fund-raising pitch at a special event.

Formerly titled "Information for Nonprofits," this site includes information on fund raising, non-profit management, and resources for non-profit organizations. The information was compiled from the soc.org.nonprofit newsgroup, an on-line discussion about the non-profit world. The site is sponsored by the Evergreen State Society, a Seattle charity that promotes civic involvement.

Created by InnoNet, a non-profit consulting organization in Washington that helps charities plan and evaluate programs, this Web site offers interactive work sheets that non-profit staff members can use to plan new programs and develop budgets, grant applications, and evaluation and fund-raising plans. InnoNet offers to review users' completed plans free. The site also explains how to conduct focus-group discussions, interviews, and surveys, and provides sample evaluation tools.

The National Federation of Nonprofits, in Washington, is an association that lobbies the U.S. Postal Service, Congress, state and federal regulators, and charity watchdog organizations in behalf of its member charities. The site features two articles about non-profit postal rates, "What To Do When the Postal Service Says 'No' to Nonprofit Mailers of Standard A Mail" and "Eligibility for Non-Profit Standard (A) Postage Rates (Formerly Third Class)."

Developed by Raffa & Associates, an accounting firm in Washington, this Web site explains each state's registration requirements for charities that want to raise money from state residents. The site provides contact information for the agencies that regulate fund raising and links to the text of the state laws that govern charitable solicitation. The site also discusses the Uniform Registration Statement, an effort to standardize registration requirements among states.

Organizations can use the statement -- which is available on the site -- to register in 32 states and the District of Columbia, although six of the states require additional information.
